Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) observed “July Martyrs’ Day” on Wednesday, July 16, 2024, with a series of solemn and reflective programs, including the lowering of the national and university flags to half-mast, the national anthem, a discussion meeting, documentary and film screenings, and special prayers.

The day’s observance aligned with the symbolic "36th day of July" and began at 9:30 AM with the ceremonial lowering of the flags. A discussion session was then held at the Prof. Mohammad Sharif Hossain Gallery in the university’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building.

JUST Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid attended the event along with the family members of July Uprising martyr Abdullah.

Highlighting the significance of the day, Dr. Majid said, “From the Language Movement to the July Uprising, we pray for the departed souls of all martyrs and wish recovery for those still suffering. I myself was a front-line protester during the July Uprising. When I raised my voice against the repression of students, I was threatened. But I did not back down, because remaining silent would have meant siding with injustice.”

He continued, “People from all walks of life—students, professionals, even children—rose up against oppression and many were killed indiscriminately. This new Bangladesh is born out of those sacrifices. If we fail to rebuild this nation, it would be our failure. We must now take responsibility to construct a new, just nation. Inspired by the courage of martyrs like Abu Sayeed and Mugdho, we pledge to build an equal society.”

Following the discussion, special prayers were held after Zuhr at the university’s central mosque, seeking forgiveness for the martyrs of the July Uprising and speedy recovery for those injured.

As part of the one-year commemoration of the July People’s Uprising, JUST has launched a 36-day program schedule running through August 5.

The discussion meeting was inaugurated by the Convener of the July Uprising Celebration Committee and JUST Treasurer, Professor Dr. Hossain Al Mamun. Other speakers included Member Secretary of the Celebration Committee and Director of the Student Counseling and Guidance Department, Dr. Md. Rafiul Hasan; martyr Abdullah’s elder brother, Md. Jahangir Alam; and several students from various departments including PES, IPE, Mathematics, FE, GEBT, and Chemical Engineering.

The event was attended by deans, department chairs, directors, faculty members, students, officers, and staff. The program was moderated by Lecturer Md. Shahanur Rahman Shuvo from the Department of Finance and Banking.
