A man named Md. Rajib Khan, alias Ishan, has been arrested by Mohammadpur Police under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for allegedly defrauding a young woman and her family of Tk 10.5 lakh by promising to take them abroad.

Nearly two years ago, Ishan, a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Greece, came into contact with a young woman named Sumaiya Sultana through Facebook. Their online acquaintance soon turned into a romantic relationship. Building on this bond, Ishan proposed marriage to Sumaiya and began communicating with her parents and relatives.

At one point, Ishan also promised to send Sumaiya’s younger brother and her sister’s brother-in-law to Greece at his own expense. However, when he failed to keep his promise, Sumaiya’s family lodged a complaint against him.

According to the case details, Ishan took Tk 10.5 lakh from Sumaiya and her family under the pretext of arranging visas and travel to Greece. Upon returning to Bangladesh, he demanded more money from Sumaiya’s brother for the same purpose. On October 8, Ishan met Sumaiya at the Shyamoli Square Shopping Mall, where he took another Tk 5 lakh in cash before disappearing and cutting off all communication with her.

Realizing that she had been deceived, Sumaiya filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station on October 17, accusing Ishan of embezzling the total amount through fraud and breach of trust.

Confirming the matter, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP’s Media Division, Talebur Rahman, said, “On Sunday, October 19, at around 1:30 p.m., a police team conducted a raid near Mirpur-10 Metro Rail Station and arrested Ishan, aged 28.”

He added, “Under the guise of sending his girlfriend abroad, Ishan took Tk 1.5 lakh through a banking app and another Tk 4 lakh via bKash in multiple transactions. Later, he returned to Bangladesh on October 6, claiming he would marry Sumaiya. The victim even completed the passport processing as per his instructions. However, as he continued down the path of fraud, legal action has been taken against him.”

Sources confirmed that following the October 8 meeting and monetary exchange, Ishan completely severed contact with Sumaiya. Upon realizing the deception, she lodged the official complaint that led to his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.
