Three Science and Technology Festivals in a Week in Dhaka
The final week of May is set to be abuzz with scientific excitement as multiple national science events take place across Dhaka, inspiring young minds and promoting innovation.
On Saturday, two major events will be launched simultaneously — the inaugural S.N. Bose National Science Festival at Dhaka University’s historic Curzon Hall, and the 46th National Science and Technology Week along with the Science Olympiad at Willes Little Flower School and College in Kakrail, under the national education board.
At Willes Little Flower School, young science enthusiasts will engage in quizzes, Olympiads, and project displays. The opening ceremony will be inaugurated by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Md. Mokabbir Hossain. Dhaka’s Deputy Commissioner Tanvir Ahmed will preside over the ceremony, which will also be attended by Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Director General of the National Museum of Science and Technology Munira Sultana, and the school’s Ad Hoc Committee President A.B.M. Abdus Sattar.
President of Willes Science Club, Takibur Rahman Khan, shared that “in addition to the inauguration on Saturday, participants will be setting up their projects. The Olympiad and quiz competition will be held the next day, followed by a seminar and the prize-giving ceremony on the final day.”
Meanwhile, the S.N. Bose National Science Festival at Curzon Hall will feature Rubik’s Cube contests, chess tournaments, poster presentations, innovative project showcases, speeches, and a science Olympiad. In anticipation of the festival, a 72-hour hackathon began on May 20 and concluded on May 23. From 108 registered teams presenting innovative coding-based solutions, the top 10 teams were selected.
Organized by a student-led platform called Biggan Adda, the science fest aims to inspire scientific exploration. One of the platform’s organizers, Umama Fatema, stated, “The inaugural session, beginning at 10 AM, will feature Dhaka University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sayma Haque Bidisha, Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Dr. Enamul Haque, and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Dr. Upoma Kabir, among others.” The festival will run from 10 AM on both Saturday and Sunday.
According to organizers, 30 stalls will be set up within Curzon Hall premises by various scientific companies, research institutions, and publishers. Visitors will be able to explore a wide array of local technological innovations showcased by both public and private universities and research organizations.
The science-packed week will culminate on May 30 with the National Science and Technology Festival, jointly organized by Youthpreneur Network and Dhaka University Science Society. The event will be hosted at the University Laboratory School and College, under the university’s Institute of Education and Research.
Now in its fifth edition, the festival will feature competitions in five categories, where young scientists will participate in Olympiads conducted in a combined MCQ and creative format. IQ tests and scrapbook design contests will be open to all. Age-specific speech competitions on themes such as “Contributions of Science to the Industrial Revolution,” “Technology in Economic Development,” “AI in Education,” and “The Role of Technology in Building a Modern State” will also be held.
This week-long celebration of science and technology is poised to ignite passion for innovation among Bangladesh’s youth and contribute to the country’s growing interest in STEM education.
