In a significant operation, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police apprehended five members of a professional hijacking ring in the capital’s Kadamtali area. The arrested individuals were found with 11 stolen mobile phones, a power bank, and a HiAce vehicle used for their criminal activities.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Mohammad Akhtar Hossain (45), Harunur Rashid (50), Kamal Hossain (45), Mohammad Nuruddin (48), and Mohammad Hanif (55).

According to CTTC sources, the Anti-Illegal Arms and Canine Team conducted an early-morning raid on Wednesday, January 15, based on confidential information, leading to the arrests. During the operation, law enforcement recovered the stolen items and seized the vehicle used for the crimes.

Modus Operandi
Initial interrogation revealed that this gang has been operating across the capital for over a year. They used a HiAce vehicle to masquerade as regular passengers, picking up unsuspecting commuters from areas like Sayedabad, Jatrabari, Rayerbagh, and Signboard. Once inside, victims were held hostage in a convenient location, stripped of their belongings, and abandoned.

The gang reportedly divided the loot among themselves and sold the stolen mobile phones in Gulistan. During questioning, the suspects admitted to robbing over 500 individuals during their criminal activities.

The arrested individuals also face multiple cases at Kadamtali Police Station. CTTC officials confirmed that “legal proceedings are underway against the suspects.”
