JUST Chemical Engineering Welcomes Freshers

Research, technology and career readiness took centre stage as the Department of Chemical Engineering at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) welcomed its new students with flowers and organised a seminar titled “Focus on Research and Career”. Speakers stressed that academic degrees alone are not enough, urging students to develop communication, IT, software and teamwork skills alongside their technical education.

The reception and seminar were held at 11am on Monday, October 5, at Professor Mohammad Sharif Hossain Gallery of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building. The event was organised by the Department of Chemical Engineering. JUST Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan attended as chief guest, while Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Faruk Hasan was present as special guest.

Speaking at the reception, Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan said the Department of Chemical Engineering has repeatedly brought recognition to JUST through academic excellence and research. He said a project from the department had been presented by the Prime Minister at a national innovation fair, describing it as an example of the department’s strong academic and research standards.

Addressing the freshers, he said they were pursuing higher education with funds generated from taxes paid by the people and the state. Therefore, they should maintain a sense of responsibility towards the state, society and their families. He also stressed that earning an academic degree alone would not be sufficient. Students should develop strong communication skills, IT and software knowledge, and interpersonal skills such as teamwork.

Professor Dr Mohammad Faruk Hasan said university life would give students a new form of freedom, but that freedom should not turn into irresponsible behaviour or cause harm to others.

He urged students to avoid wasting time and set clear goals from the beginning so that they could make their families and society proud after four years. He also reminded them that obstacles would inevitably arise in life and that they would have to overcome those challenges to move forward. He said parents and teachers hoped their students would achieve even more than they had and expressed confidence that the new students would one day make the university and the country proud on the global stage.

The event was chaired by Professor Dr Javed Hossain Khan, Chairman of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Professor Dr Imran Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and Dr Md Rafiul Hasan, Director of the Office of Student Counselling and Guidance, also spoke at the event.

Professor Dr Biplab Kumar Biswas, Associate Professor Dr Mosa Afroza Khatun and other teachers and students of the department were present. Chemical Engineering students Maymuna Tasnim and Adrita Ashrafi conducted the programme.

The “Focus on Research and Career” seminar began at 2pm following the reception. JUST Chemical Engineering alumni Dr Md Rafiul Hasan, Dr Syed Imdadul Hossain Sohan and Toukir Ahmed Imran participated as speakers.

The seminar focused on research, higher education, professional preparation and potential career pathways for Chemical Engineering graduates. The day’s programme concluded in the evening with a cultural event featuring performances by students of the department.
