Online Threats Cannot Intimidate People

Information and Broadcasting State Minister Yasir Khan Chowdhury has said that online threats cannot intimidate the people of Bangladesh. He said the people, who had stood against injustice and misrule in the past, would again build collective resistance to ensure justice for enforced disappearances, killings and other crimes.

He made the remarks as the chief speaker at a rally organised by the Mymensingh North District BNP at Dhan Mahal in Haluaghat municipality on Wednesday afternoon. The rally was organised in protest against what the organisers described as attempts to create instability through violence.

Yasir Khan Chowdhury said the people had endured imprisonment and repression for 17 years and, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, established democracy and restored voting rights. He said they would remain in the field with the people against those seeking to disrupt what he described as the democratic progress.

He further said those who had allegedly attempted to destabilise the country through looting and violence over a prolonged period must be brought under the law and held accountable. No one would be allowed to compromise the safety and security of the people, he added.

Speaking as the chief guest, BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Emran Saleh Prince said the country was facing various challenges at home and abroad while moving forward with reconstruction, addressing public problems and implementing electoral commitments. He urged everyone to remain vigilant.

Prince said the people did not want terrorism, anarchy or instability. He said BNP did not believe in confrontational politics but would take a firm position against any attempt to undermine national stability. Those involved in violence or anarchy would be brought under the law, he said.

The rally was presided over by Professor AKM Enayet Ullah Kalam, convener of Mymensingh North District BNP. Motahar Hossain Talukder, chairman of the Mymensingh Development Authority and joint convener of the district BNP, also spoke as a special guest. Leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated and associate organisations from the district and upazilas attended the programme.
