Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) administration has relieved Prof. Dr. Firoz Ahmed, Chairman of the Microbiology Department and former president of the Awami League-aligned teacher panel 'Neel Dal', from his departmental post following the display of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's image during the national anthem.
The decision was formalized through an official order signed by Acting Registrar Mohammad Tamzid Hossain Chowdhury on Wednesday (September 23). According to the order, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Shafiqul Islam will serve as the interim Chairman of the Department of Microbiology until the investigation concludes.
The incident occurred on September 17 during the inauguration of 'International Microorganism Day 2026' organized by the Microbiology Department at the Bir Sreshtho Shaheed Mohammad Ruhul Amin Auditorium. While the national anthem was played, a background video displayed Sheikh Hasina's image on the digital screen. Considering the incident disrespectful to the martyrs and injured of the July 2024 uprising and a breach of service discipline, show-cause notices were served to Department Chair Prof. Dr. Firoz Ahmed and Event Convener Associate Prof. Dr. Khondokar Fahmida Sultana, to which both submitted responses. Organizers explained that the error occurred inadvertently due to playing an unreviewed YouTube video during event preparations.
To investigate the matter thoroughly, the university formed a three-member probe committee chaired by Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Hasan Uddin, with Dean of the Life Sciences Faculty Professor Dr. Gazi Md. Mohsin as a member, and Proctor Professor A F M Arifur Rahman as the member-secretary. Acting Registrar Mohammad Tamzid Hossain Chowdhury confirmed that further administrative actions will be taken based on the committee's findings.
