OpenAI Gets $5.5B Stake Warrants in SB Energy
OpenAI has received warrants to purchase shares worth approximately $5.5 billion in SB Energy, a subsidiary of Japanese technology investment giant SoftBank Group, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing draft IPO documents.
SB Energy, which develops renewable-energy projects and data-center infrastructure, is preparing to go public through an initial public offering (IPO). The company could receive a valuation of more than $50 billion when it enters the public market.
The disclosure of OpenAI’s massive warrant package has attracted significant attention across the technology sector, highlighting the increasingly close relationship between artificial intelligence and energy infrastructure.
OpenAI, Nvidia and SoftBank Join Forces
OpenAI is not the only major technology company closely tied to SB Energy. Semiconductor giant Nvidia recently invested $1.5 billion directly in the company.
Nvidia has also reportedly agreed to provide up to $10.5 billion in financing support to help OpenAI lease a massive SB Energy data-center campus in Ohio.
Under their broader arrangements, SoftBank and OpenAI will jointly serve as long-term tenants at SB Energy’s three major data-center campuses.
Energy Infrastructure for the AI Boom
Founded in 2019, SB Energy develops and operates large-scale solar and wind power projects as well as data-center infrastructure. The enormous computing requirements of AI models and chatbots have created rapidly growing demand for reliable electricity and sophisticated data centers.
To meet this demand, SB Energy is developing several new renewable-energy-powered data-center campuses.
The combined involvement of OpenAI, Nvidia and SoftBank in financing and developing SB Energy points to a broader strategy in the AI industry: securing the energy and physical infrastructure needed to support the next generation of large-scale AI computing.
