Sustainable manufacturing, engineering innovation, and energy efficiency in the readymade garment sector received a boost through a strategic partnership between the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Industrial Development and Engineering Company (BIDEC). The partnership introduces patented 'Micro Sustainable Upcycling' technology to convert power-intensive capacitor ceiling fans into energy-efficient BLDC units, reducing electricity usage by 40 to 65 percent. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the BGMEA complex in Uttara on Thursday, 20 August 2026, according to a press release.

BGMEA Vice President Vidiya Amrit Khan and BIDEC Founder and CEO Kazi Mohammad Ibrahim signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations. Field trials conducted across 42 BGMEA member factories demonstrated 47 to 65 percent power savings.

Vidiya Amrit Khan stated that local innovations by young entrepreneurs effectively address core industrial challenges. She noted that this initiative accelerates decarbonization while strengthening the 'Made in Bangladesh' brand globally.

BGMEA Director Shah Rayeed Chowdhury highlighted that energy optimization is now vital for business continuity. He added that an ROI period of 1.5 to 2 years makes this local technology an attractive solution that reduces national grid pressure.

The signing ceremony was attended by BGMEA Energy Optimization Committee Adviser and Decarbonization Committee Co-Chair Kamran Sadiq, Sustainable Energy Committee Chairman Saifur Rahman, Energy Optimization Committee Chairman Nishat Hamid, and BIDEC Chief Business Development Officer Md. Muyeed Hasan. Industry experts noted the technology will support compliance with EU supply chain due diligence and Fourth Industrial Revolution benchmarks.
