Android 17 Beta Brings Custom Quick Settings and New Call Protection
Google has released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 for compatible Pixel smartphones. Along with fixing various minor bugs and system issues, the new software introduces several notable features. The most significant change comes to the Quick Settings menu in the notification panel.
The latest Android 17 build introduces an integrated layout editor, allowing users to customize almost all aspects of the Quick Settings panel according to their preferences.
With the new layout editor, users can choose which features should appear as larger tiles. They can also reposition the brightness slider and media player—used for controlling music and video playback—by dragging them higher or lower on the screen.
As a result, Pixel users will have greater freedom to customize the Quick Settings panel instead of being restricted to Google's predetermined layout.
More Customization and Visual Changes
Google is also planning to give users greater control over theme selection in the next major version of Android.
The new interface will include a dedicated slider that allows users to adjust the hue of four primary colors used across their device according to their preferences.
In addition, Google is working on adding new blur effects to various visual elements of the interface to enhance its overall appearance.
Enhanced Security to Combat Social Engineering
The update also places greater emphasis on protecting users from social engineering attacks, in which scammers manipulate people through fear, deception or enticing offers.
A new Call Protection feature has been introduced for this purpose. Under the new system, whenever a user attempts to dial a call-forwarding code, a confirmation dialog will appear on the screen.
This additional confirmation step is designed to make it more difficult for scammers to secretly redirect a user's calls to another number by exploiting the user's confusion or lack of awareness.
