The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) has organised the Health & Wellness Seminar-2026: The Science of Lifelong Health: Nutrition and Lifestyle to promote healthier lifestyles and improve long-term well-being among engineers.

The seminar was held on Sunday (July 5) at the IEB headquarters in Dhaka under the chairmanship of IEB President and RAJUK Chairman Engineer Mohammad Riazul Islam (Rizu).

Addressing the event, he said changing lifestyles have significantly altered people's eating habits, particularly among younger generations who increasingly rely on fast food and sugary beverages.

He warned that excessive consumption of processed foods, sugar, unhealthy fats and sodium is contributing to rising cases of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and kidney disorders.

"Good health is essential for individual, family and national development. Engineers play a vital role beyond infrastructure development. Therefore, maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle is crucial for sustaining long-term productivity," he said.

Welcoming participants, IEB Honorary Assistant Secretary (Administration & Finance) Engineer Muhammad Ahsanul Russell said the organisation has long been committed to enhancing engineers' professional capacity through training programmes, seminars and workshops across its nationwide and overseas chapters.

He noted that engineers' physical and mental well-being is equally important alongside professional development, which inspired the organisation to arrange its first dedicated health seminar.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Professor Dr. Md. Mujibul Haque, Medical Consultant and Clinical Research Manager at Biologics–Quantum Cellular Medicine (QCM), USA, and Professor of Integrative Medicine at Washington University of Science and Technology.

He said health is not merely the absence of disease but a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being.

Highlighting the growing burden of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer and mental health disorders worldwide, he said many of these non-communicable diseases can be prevented through healthier diets, regular exercise and sustainable lifestyle changes.

The keynote also discussed the health benefits of scientifically managed fasting, noting that appropriate fasting may improve metabolic health, support weight management and contribute to long-term wellness when practised under proper medical guidance.

Dr. Haque stressed the importance of at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity, including walking, jogging or cycling, to improve cardiovascular health, control blood pressure, reduce body weight and alleviate stress.

He further said adults should ideally sleep seven to eight hours each night to support memory, immune function, mental health and cellular repair.

The seminar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session where participants discussed nutrition, healthy habits, physical activity and maintaining good health despite demanding professional schedules.
