Polish game developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed that its acclaimed action role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077 has reached the landmark of 40 million copies sold worldwide. According to the latest figures released on July 3, the total includes sales of both the standalone version of the game and the Ultimate Edition bundle, which includes the 2023 Phantom Liberty expansion.

When the game launched in December 2020, it faced severe criticism due to excessive bugs, technical issues, and poor performance on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. The situation became so serious that Sony temporarily removed the game from the PlayStation Store and offered refunds to players. Despite the backlash and the loss of player confidence, CD Projekt Red continued to support and improve the title.

Over the past five and a half years, the studio has delivered a series of major updates, fundamentally overhauled the game's core mechanics through releases such as the Version 2.0 update, and launched the critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty story expansion in 2023. Together, these efforts have transformed Cyberpunk 2077 into one of the gaming industry's most celebrated redemption stories.

In a statement thanking players, CD Projekt Red Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said, "Forty million copies sold is proof of Cyberpunk 2077's enduring strength. It is a great example of CD Projekt's ability to create high-quality and engaging stories that keep players invested in this world for years. It also provides an excellent foundation for our future projects in this universe."

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Mac platforms.

CD Projekt Red has already begun development of the next installment in the franchise, Cyberpunk 2 (codename: Project Orion), which is expected to launch around the end of 2030 with an estimated budget of approximately US$416 million. The studio is also actively working on The Witcher 4 and a remake of the original The Witcher.
