LinkedIn, one of the world’s leading professional social networking platforms, has announced plans to lay off 5 percent of its total workforce. According to a Reuters report published on Wednesday, approximately 875 employees will be let go from the company, which currently employs around 17,500 full-time staff. The Microsoft-owned platform said the decision is aimed at reducing costs and increasing investment in key strategic projects.
In a message to employees, newly appointed CEO Daniel Shapero stated that the company is scaling back spending in areas such as marketing campaigns, vendor costs, and office space usage. Instead, LinkedIn is prioritizing initiatives that are expected to deliver greater long-term business impact and higher returns on investment. The layoffs will primarily affect teams within the Global Business Organization, Marketing, Engineering, and Product divisions.
As part of the restructuring process, LinkedIn is also closing one of its offices located in Graz, Austria. Shapero noted that the company needs to become more agile to effectively address future challenges. However, notably, the company has not directly attributed the layoffs to artificial intelligence (AI).
In the first three months of the current year, LinkedIn’s revenue increased by 12 percent compared to the same period last year. Despite this growth, the layoffs appear to reflect broader cost-cutting measures by its parent company Microsoft. Just weeks earlier, Microsoft had offered voluntary retirement packages to 7 percent of its workforce.
Shapero said, “LinkedIn will continue to serve as a trusted platform for professionals and organizations worldwide. However, to sustain long-term growth while maintaining profitability, it has become necessary to adapt our operating model and increase investment in infrastructure.”
Technology analysts view this announcement as the latest example of the ongoing global trend of workforce reductions in the tech sector over the past two years.
