Professor Dr. Sheikh Mizanur Rahman has set a remarkable example by donating 50 lakh Taka to provide financial assistance to underprivileged yet meritorious students. In his name and that of his spouse Firoza Parvin, the “Professor Dr. Sheikh Mizanur Rahman and Firoza Parvin Education Welfare Trust” is being established at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST).

On 10 May, Sunday, at the university’s administrative building, in the Vice-Chancellor’s conference room, Professor Dr. Sheikh Mizanur Rahman and his wife handed over a cheque of 50 lakh Taka to Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Yiarul Kabir.

It has been learned that the principal fund of the trust will be kept as a fixed deposit. Scholarships will be provided every year to underprivileged and meritorious students from various departments of the university through the interest earned from this deposit.

At the cheque handover ceremony, Professor Dr. Sheikh Mizanur Rahman said that he had long cherished the intention of establishing an education welfare trust to support underprivileged meritorious students. He expressed gratitude that the initiative was realized with the cooperation of the university administration. He said that it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure that no student’s education is hampered by financial constraints.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Yiarul Kabir said that this is the first instance in the university’s history where an education welfare trust has been established through the personal funding of a teacher. He added that Professor Mizan’s initiative will inspire students and help underprivileged students become more focused on their studies and research.

Speeches were also delivered at the event by Firoza Parvin, Convener of the Deans Committee Professor Dr. Imran Khan, Registrar Md. Kazi Jalal Uddin, and Chairman of the Department of Nutrition and Food Technology Professor Dr. Shirin Nigar. Deans of various faculties and chairpersons of departments were also present at the time.

It is noteworthy that Professor Dr. Sheikh Mizanur Rahman has long been engaged in teaching and research at the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of the university. He is currently serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences and Technology.
