Burnt Benapole Express Coach Restored at Syedpur Railway Workshop
A coach of the Benapole Express that had been completely burnt in Dhaka has been fully restored at the country’s largest Syedpur Railway Workshop. The repaired coach, numbered 7936, was handed over to the Railway Traffic Department on Saturday, 14 March, according to Carriage Shop In-Charge (SSE) Mominul Islam.
He said workers and staff at the workshop worked tirelessly to restore the coach to its original condition. “Now it is impossible to tell that the coach had once been burnt and rendered inoperative,” he added.
Divisional Superintendent (DS) of the Syedpur Railway Workshop Shah Sufi Noor Mohammad said the burnt coach numbered 7936 will now be included in the railway fleet for the upcoming Eid travel season. “We have refurbished the coach to look like new,” he said.
According to Senior Sub-Assistant Engineer (SAE) of the Schedule Section of the Syedpur Railway Workshop Ruhul Amin Rubel, the workshop’s workers and employees have already set an example through their repair expertise by surpassing their target and repairing a total of 126 coaches.
Railway sources said that on the night of 6 January 2024, around 9:00 pm, miscreants set fire to the Benapole Express train near Gopibag in Dhaka. Coach number 7936 was completely destroyed in the blaze, and four passengers in that coach were burned to death. Among the victims was talented student Abu Talha of Bangladesh Army University of Science and Technology, located at the Syedpur Cantonment in Nilphamari.
The damaged coach was sent to the Syedpur Railway Workshop for repairs on 13 January of the same year.
