JUST Honors Begum Khaleda Zia in Solemn Ceremony

In a solemn tribute to Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister, the late Begum Khaleda Zia, Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) organized a series of commemorative events. On 4 January (Sunday), the university held a memorial meeting to honor her legacy as a symbol of national unity and resilience.

The event took place at the Professor Mohammad Sharif Hossain Gallery of the Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building. Activities included Quran recitation, the national anthem, a one-minute silence, and prayers. Professor Nargis Begum, a member of JUST’s Regent Board, attended as the chief guest, while the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, presided over the program. Professor Dr. Hossain Al Mamun, Treasurer of JUST, served as the master of ceremonies.

In her speech, Professor Nargis Begum described Begum Khaleda Zia as an unwavering, humane leader and a guiding light in Bangladeshi politics. She noted that before Khaleda Zia’s premiership, the country faced fragile democracy, a weak economy, and poor governance structures. Under her leadership, Bangladesh was restructured into a progressive, dignified nation, maintaining balanced international relations and promoting modern education, including women’s and technical education. Professor Nargis called on attendees to pray for the departed leader’s soul.

Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid emphasized Khaleda Zia’s lifelong commitment to Bangladesh’s independence, unity, and sovereignty, praising her as a respected figure in the nation’s democratic history.

Other speakers included Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Dr. Md. Ziaul Amin; Proctor Dr. Eng. Md. Imran Khan; Assistant Director of the Audit Branch, Md. Moniruzzaman; Proctor’s Office staff member, Md. Robiul Islam; and the President of the Journalists’ Association, Md. Ruhul Amin. Faculty members, department heads, officers, staff, and students from across the university were also present. Following the program, a special prayer session was held at JUST’s central mosque for the soul of the late Begum Khaleda Zia.
