OpenAI has now made ChatGPT’s Group Chat feature available globally for all users. The feature is accessible across all plans—Free, Go, Plus, and Pro, according to a report from TechCrunch.

Earlier, the feature was tested last week in Japan and New Zealand. Now it has been rolled out to everyone. This new feature transforms ChatGPT from a one-to-one assistant into a collaborative workspace where friends, family, or colleagues can jointly plan, write, or make decisions.

Up to 20 people can join a group chat, and each participant’s personal settings and memory remain private. Users can tap the human-shaped icon to add members or share a link to invite others. Before joining a group, everyone must set up a small profile with a name, username, and picture. Notably, when a new person is added to a chat, the previous conversation remains unchanged, and a new conversation thread begins.

ChatGPT will speak when needed or stay silent, depending on the context, and users can tag “ChatGPT” to ask it to respond. It can also react to messages with emojis and reference profile pictures.

OpenAI says this is just the beginning of their expansion into social features. The company expects ChatGPT to take a more active role in real group conversations in the future. The announcement comes shortly after the release of GPT-5.1 and marks the next step following the launch of Sora in September.
