Walton Wins World-Class Waste-Minimizing Award
Bangladesh’s tech giant and superbrand Walton has earned the LEED Platinum Certification for its Mold and Die Factory Complex, recognizing it as an environmentally friendly facility. The certification was awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for Walton’s sustainable development initiatives, energy, fuel, and water efficiency, and eco-friendly practices. With this achievement, Walton adds another international accolade to its green factory portfolio.
On Wednesday, 20 August, at Walton’s corporate office in Dhaka, Chairman S M Shamsul Alam and Managing Director S M Mahbubul Alam of Walton Hi-Tech Industries PLC formally received the LEED Platinum Certificate at a grand ceremony.
The event was attended by senior Walton officials as well as Ananta Ahmed, an international green building expert from 360-Degree Total Solution Limited, the firm that provided technical support for achieving the certification.
Reacting to the achievement, Walton Hi-Tech’s chairman S M Shamsul Alam said, “The Walton family is extremely delighted that our Mold and Die Factory has received the globally prestigious LEED Platinum Certification in recognition of its environmentally friendly operations. We aim to leave a beautiful and sustainable planet for future generations. That is why sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives have been implemented throughout the factory and production processes. The LEED certification will further encourage Walton in sustainable development and green factory practices.”
Managing Director S M Mahbubul Alam expressed gratitude to 360-Degree Total Solution for their technical support, stating, “Walton is committed to environmental protection. With the goal of contributing significantly to Bangladesh’s sustainable development, our factory has undertaken various green projects in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. We have designed eco-friendly structures emphasizing zero carbon emissions, efficient electricity, fuel, and water usage. Measures include rooftop solar power projects, floating solar power initiatives, maximum utilization and reuse of rainwater, advanced ventilation systems, and recycling of plastic and metal. Walton will continue these green initiatives to protect the environment.”
International green building expert Ananta Ahmed highlighted Walton’s pioneering role, saying, “Walton is the first in Bangladesh’s electronics sector to achieve the globally prestigious LEED Platinum Certification. This certification evaluates a building’s environmental impact and performance, assessing energy and water usage, carbon emissions, material selection, and indoor environmental quality. Based on scores in these areas, different levels of LEED certification are awarded. Walton’s Mold and Die Factory achieved the highest scores, earning the LEED Platinum Certification.”
Following international sustainability standards, Walton’s Mold and Die Factory spans 376,000 square feet with a green structural design. Measures have been taken to maximize natural daylight over electrical lighting. A 2.1-megawatt rooftop solar power system has been installed, with the factory using less electricity than it produces. Advanced ventilation systems ensure comfortable internal air quality, and rainwater collection and reuse systems are in place.
