Reddit Moves to Restrict Content Access Without Login Amid Declining Search Traffic
Reddit, the popular social media and open forum platform, has decided to end unrestricted access to its content without requiring users to log in. As a result, visitors who do not have an account or are logged out will no longer be able to view posts and discussions directly on the platform.
The company has taken this strict measure amid a concerning decline in traffic from traditional search engines, partly driven by artificial intelligence systems such as Google's AI Overviews, which are changing how users discover online content.
Trial Rollout to Begin Outside the United States
In a letter to shareholders, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman confirmed that the platform is being transformed into a login-only environment to encourage new users to register and remain active.
The policy will initially be tested in selected countries outside the United States. Huffman said the company is examining the technical limits to determine at what stage ordinary visitors arriving through search engines or the app should be presented with a mandatory login prompt.
Impact of AI Search and Declining Traffic
Reddit has experienced a significant decline in incoming traffic in recent times, partly due to extensive data collection by AI platforms without permission and changes in the way search engines deliver information.
According to Huffman, the platform lost an average of more than one million search referrals per week during October alone.
Expressing frustration over these changes in search technology, he said AI systems no longer direct traffic to websites as they once did. Consequently, Reddit had little choice but to restrict access to its open data to registered users in order to protect its business interests and information assets.
New Strategies for Advertising and Security
According to Reddit, user activity on the platform can be analysed more effectively when visitors are logged in. This provides valuable insights for delivering more targeted and effective advertisements. The policy will also help the company comply with emerging online safety and age-related laws and regulations worldwide.
However, technology analysts believe that imposing such restrictions on a forum widely regarded as one of the internet's most open repositories of information could generate considerable dissatisfaction among ordinary users.
