Technology giant Meta has launched an entirely new fashion app powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Named ‘Style Sketch’, the app allows users to experiment with different clothing and styling combinations from the comfort of their homes.

The app is currently being rolled out on a limited experimental basis for Android and iOS users in selected Asian countries, including Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand.

From Social Media Photos to a Digital Wardrobe

Technology expert Matt Navarra first brought the app's launch to public attention through his X (formerly Twitter) account. By connecting to a user's Facebook or Instagram account, the app can analyse previously posted photos and automatically create a virtual or digital wardrobe.

Users who do not wish to link their social media accounts can also create their own digital clothing catalogue by uploading photos from their camera roll or adding new pictures directly.

Virtual Try-On and Smart Trip Planning

One of the app's most appealing features is its advanced virtual try-on capability. Users can preview how different outfit combinations would look on a realistic avatar or model designed to match their body shape and skin tone.

In addition, users can create new styles and trendy looks based on specific clothing items or footwear. The AI app can even generate day-by-day trip-packing plans based on current weather conditions, travel destinations, and the duration of a trip.

Competitive Landscape and Meta's Strategy

Earlier this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that advances in AI technology were making it much easier to develop new applications, enabling the company to introduce a wider range of apps in the future. As part of this strategy, Meta recently launched a pet-focused app called ‘Waddle World’ in the Philippines.

However, Meta is not alone in the fashion technology market. Google has already introduced a virtual clothing try-on feature in its AI-powered search, while Google Photos also offers a feature for cataloguing users' clothing. OpenAI, meanwhile, has introduced clothing try-on capabilities through ChatGPT, allowing users to upload images and experiment with different outfits.

Nevertheless, Meta's Style Sketch app could gain a competitive advantage through its direct integration with social media and access to the extensive data ecosystem of Instagram and Facebook. Meta has yet to make any official announcement about when the app will become available worldwide or in other regions.
