- DMP Cantonment Thana OC Md. Rakibul Islam withdrawn following controversial viral audio recording
- Audio featured inappropriate remarks regarding political figures and police department capability
- Move follows recent removal of Gulshan DC Tanvir Ahmed and OC Daud Hossain over security lapses
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has withdrawn Md. Rakibul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station, following the leak of a controversial audio recording on social media. DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed confirmed the administrative action on Thursday (September 17).
The viral audio clip, which generated significant public criticism over the past two days, contained conversation where OC Rakibul Islam was heard commenting on the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and downplaying the authority of the police force. In the audio, he was heard stating that "nothing would happen" if she returned in December and suggesting she return earlier, remarking that "street police are weak" and "police cannot do anything."
This action comes amid heightened administrative scrutiny within the DMP. Earlier on Wednesday (September 16), Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gulshan Division M Tanveer Ahmed and Gulshan Model Thana OC Md. Daud Hossain were relieved of their duties and attached to DMP Headquarters following a procession brought out in Gulshan by the banned political organization Awami League and its affiliates.
