Robi Leads High-Speed Telecom Modernization
• Over 4,800 Dhaka sites upgraded; Chittagong project concludes September.
• Sole operator utilizing the 900 MHz band for 4G connectivity.
• Best effective per-GB data rate backed by 5G readiness.
Robi Axiata PLC has reinforced its position as the nation's leading digital operator by completing major network modernizations to deliver optimal data services. Robi Chief Executive Officer Ziad Shatara shared the project milestones on Wednesday (August 19, 2026) during an event held at Robi's corporate headquarters in Tejgaon, Dhaka.
Ziad Shatara stated that Robi remains the largest data operator in Bangladesh, commanding the highest market share on Facebook and leading per-user data consumption. With 72 percent of its subscriber base utilizing 4G devices, Robi is prioritizing top-tier network quality across high-density markets.
He noted that over 4,800 sites were upgraded across Greater Dhaka, covering 2G and 4G layers while ensuring immediate 5G-ready architecture. The deployment also aligns with Robi’s corporate ESG roadmap to attain Net-Zero emissions by 2050.
Modernization in Chittagong will conclude by September 2026, addressing tight indoor propagation where site spacing is under 300 meters. Shatara highlighted that Robi is Bangladesh’s only operator using the 900 MHz band for 4G, with plans underway to expand its spectrum portfolio via BTRC consultations.
He added that high subscriber usage translates into the market's lowest effective cost per gigabyte. The deployment engaged over 100 subcontractors modernizing 120–150 sites weekly, generating vital indirect technical employment across Bangladesh.
The event was attended by Postal, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam, Prime Minister's Telecom and ICT Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, BTRC Chairman Major General (Retd.) Md. Emdad Ul Bari, and senior corporate leadership.
