Not Garages but Dreams Change History: From Silicon Valley to Silicon River

Many people believe that the world's greatest technology companies were born with abundant capital, world-class infrastructure, or an ideal environment. History, however, tells a very different story. It clearly shows that every major technological revolution began amid profound uncertainty, scarce resources, and the unwavering courage to accomplish what once seemed impossible. Garages, university dormitories, or tiny rented rooms were never the true secret behind success. The real driving force lay in human imagination, relentless perseverance, and the determination to reshape the world.

The journey of Apple began in 1976 in the modest garage of Steve Jobs' family home. To raise an initial investment of just US$1,300, Steve Jobs sold his beloved Volkswagen van, while Steve Wozniak parted with his prized HP scientific calculator. There was no venture capital, no government-backed mega project, and no billion-dollar startup ecosystem. What they had was a firm conviction that one day every individual would own a personal computer. Today, Apple stands as one of the world's most valuable and influential technology companies.

Google was born as a research project by two PhD students at Stanford University—Larry Page and Sergey Brin. At the time, they could not afford expensive, high-performance servers. Instead, they assembled their own servers using inexpensive components, even constructing the hard drive rack from LEGO building blocks. Their ambition was never to build the world's largest company; it was simply to solve a complex problem more effectively than anyone else. That commitment to research and problem-solving ultimately gave rise to the global powerhouse that Google is today.

Amazon also began in a rented garage. Jeff Bezos built his earliest office desks out of ordinary wooden doors. He started by selling books online because it was one of the simplest sectors in which to launch a digital business at the time. Yet his vision extended far beyond books. He sought to reinvent the entire future of digital commerce. Today, Amazon is far more than an e-commerce platform—it is a global leader in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, and logistics.

Meta, originally known as Facebook, was founded in a small dormitory room at Harvard University. Mark Zuckerberg did not begin with a grand business strategy or substantial financial backing. He simply created an easy solution for connecting people socially—one that users genuinely wanted. Within just a few months, the platform had spread across leading universities around the world.

The story behind NVIDIA, now one of the principal driving forces of the artificial intelligence revolution, is equally inspiring. Its founders did not formulate their vision in a luxurious corporate boardroom. Instead, they sat together over breakfast at an ordinary Denny's restaurant, imagining the future. At the time, very few believed that graphics processing units (GPUs) would one day become the foundation of artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, they remained steadfast in their vision.

Microsoft was established during an era when many people questioned whether personal computers (PCs) would ever become necessary for ordinary households. Bill Gates and Paul Allen held a bold vision: "A computer on every desk and in every home." At the time, the idea appeared highly unrealistic. Today, it has become an everyday reality.

History teaches us one unmistakable lesson:

Apple did not succeed because it started in a garage.

Google did not become the world's leading search engine because its servers were built with LEGO blocks.

Nor did Amazon become a global giant because its first office desks were made from wooden doors.

They succeeded because they were able to envision a future that others could scarcely imagine.

Just as TSMC transformed the global semiconductor industry by pioneering the dedicated foundry model, and South Korea established its dominance in memory chip technology through strategic specialization, these companies prevailed because they recognized opportunities long before the rest of the world.

Those who dismiss Bangladesh's Silicon River vision by pointing to India's dominance in the global IT industry should remember that India's brand has been built upon its resilient and highly skilled programming workforce—professionals who can readily adapt themselves to virtually any corporate environment.

Our younger generation, however, possesses a different mindset.

The same determination that has shaped our history, the same defiance, stubbornness, relentless passion, and even the fierce emotions we display over football rivalries or political debates must now be redirected toward innovation and technological creation.

Our mission should not be limited to providing services for others. We must create entirely new products, services, and technological concepts—and retain global ownership of them.

Our defining strength should become the ability to transform a unique idea into a successful product faster and more affordably than anyone else.

Bangladesh today needs thousands of garages, research laboratories, homegrown startups, design centers, innovative engineering teams, courageous young entrepreneurs, and, above all, a bold national vision.

Yes, we built Pathao after seeing Uber. But now we must begin asking what a platform even better than Uber could look like. We should be imagining ride-sharing systems that consume less energy, cost less, protect the environment, operate more efficiently, and deliver uncompromising safety.

A nation truly transforms only when its people stop asking in despair, "Why can't it happen here?" and instead stand tall and ask, "Why shouldn't it?"

So, how did Silicon Valley actually come into existence?

Many believe Silicon Valley succeeded simply because California was already wealthy. That assumption is not accurate.

Until the 1940s, what is now known as Silicon Valley was primarily an agricultural region called the Valley of Heart's Delight, famous for its apricot, cherry, and olive orchards—not for microchips.

The transformation began under the leadership of Professor Frederick Terman of Stanford University. (Take note: he was a university professor.) Rather than encouraging his students merely to seek employment, he inspired them to build companies of their own. Among those students were Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, who later founded Hewlett-Packard (HP).

Stanford University subsequently established the Stanford Research Park, creating an environment where universities, research laboratories, entrepreneurs, industries, and government institutions worked together within a single ecosystem.

Then came Shockley Semiconductor. From that company emerged the famous Traitorous Eight, who went on to establish Fairchild Semiconductor. Fairchild, in turn, gave birth to Intel, AMD, National Semiconductor, and countless other technology companies.

In other words, Silicon Valley was not created by a single company.

It was created by an ecosystem.

Bangladesh's Position Today

Perhaps the most remarkable fact is that Bangladesh now possesses advantages that the founders of Apple, Google, or NVIDIA never had.

Every year, the country produces more than 20,000 engineering graduates. Thousands of Bangladeshi professionals are working across the world in semiconductor and deep-tech industries, many of them holding leadership positions at some of the world's foremost technology companies.

Today, opportunities in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, open-source technologies, RISC-V, online education, and global collaboration are more accessible than at any other time in history.

Most importantly, Bangladesh has now elevated semiconductors and deep technology to the level of national strategic priorities.

The question, therefore, is simple:

If they could change the world despite having far fewer resources and opportunities, why can't Bangladesh?

Why shouldn't we?

The answer is equally straightforward.

Because talent alone is never enough.

What truly matters is an ecosystem.

We need an environment where universities, industries, government agencies, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and Bangladeshi professionals living abroad work toward a common national objective.

We need a national purpose that tells young people:

"Your responsibility is not merely to build your own career; it is to build a new Bangladesh."

The Philosophy Behind Silicon River

This is where the philosophy of Silicon River begins.

Silicon River is not the name of an organization.

It is a movement to build a national innovation ecosystem.

Just as Stanford University planted the seeds that eventually became Silicon Valley, BSIA and universities across Bangladesh are working to transform research, innovation, and entrepreneurship into the foundations of a new technology ecosystem.

Just as Fairchild Semiconductor gave rise to countless new technology companies, Silicon River aims to nurture today's young Bangladeshis into the founders of tomorrow's globally influential technology enterprises.

Just as Silicon Valley united talent from across the world, Silicon River seeks to connect the knowledge, experience, industrial networks, and opportunities of Bangladeshi professionals working abroad with the nation's development.

This vision is already taking shape through a range of initiatives, including international roadshows, university-industry partnerships, global internship programmes, collaborative research projects, skills development initiatives, the National Semiconductor Symposium, the BEAR Summit, the BEAR to CES initiative, and many other programmes.

At first glance, these initiatives may appear unrelated.

Together, however, they are laying the foundations of Bangladesh's future technology ecosystem.

Our objective is not to imitate Silicon Valley.

Our objective is to build a distinctly Bangladeshi innovation ecosystem with its own identity and strengths.

Silicon Valley's greatest asset was venture capital.

Silicon River's greatest strengths will be its national purpose, youthful population, global Bangladeshi diaspora, collective knowledge, research capability, and collaborative leadership.

Silicon Valley ushered the world into a new era of computing.

The dream of Silicon River is to establish Bangladesh as a nation where global solutions in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, robotics, bioelectronics, and deep technology are conceived, designed, and built—where the world increasingly depends on Bangladesh for innovation in these critical fields.

In shā' Allāh, this will become one of the principal pillars of our national security and our standing in the global technological landscape. It will also strengthen national self-governance by fostering technological independence. When people unite behind a common purpose, they can achieve extraordinary things, In shā' Allāh.

These are neither empty slogans nor romantic idealism.

They are logical conclusions drawn from history and from real life. Unfortunately, many of our self-proclaimed intellectuals lack the courage, indomitable will, enthusiasm, and extraordinary work ethic required to transform such aspirations into reality.

May Almighty Allah guide and assist us.

Postscript

Over the past week, Bangladesh's mainstream newspapers have been flooded with articles on semiconductors. Almost overnight, it seems that everyone has become a semiconductor expert—barristers, former Members of Parliament, computer professionals, PhD students, and many respected teachers and academics.

Ironically, many of them have little to no academic or practical background in semiconductor technology.

Yet opinions continue to pour into newspapers and online platforms from every direction. Some offer profound insights, while others merely skim the surface with superficial commentary. We, meanwhile, are left to read and listen to it all.

O tempora, O mores!
