Artificial intelligence company Anthropic, the developer of the popular Claude AI assistant, is reportedly joining the race to develop its own custom AI chips in an effort to reduce its reliance on NVIDIA, the dominant player in the AI chip market. As part of this strategy, the company has begun preliminary discussions with South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics to strengthen its hardware infrastructure and address growing demand for AI computing resources, according to a report by technology news outlet The Information.

The report says Anthropic is exploring the use of Samsung's cutting-edge 2-nanometer manufacturing process and advanced chip packaging technology for the proposed processor. However, the project remains at a very early stage. The company has yet to finalize whether the chip will be designed primarily for AI model training or inference, how powerful it will be, or how it will be integrated into server infrastructure.

When approached for comment, Anthropic did not provide specific details but told TechCrunch that its computing strategy would continue to rely on a diversified hardware ecosystem combining chips from Google, Amazon, and NVIDIA. Industry sources, however, indicate that Anthropic recently hired Clive Chan, an experienced engineer who previously worked on OpenAI's custom chip initiative, suggesting that the company is taking its chip development plans seriously.

Market analysts believe Anthropic's move has been accelerated by a recent announcement from rival OpenAI. Last week, OpenAI unveiled its first custom inference chip, Jalapeño, developed in partnership with semiconductor company Broadcom. Built in a record nine months, the company claims the chip delivers significantly better performance per watt than conventional AI processors. Meanwhile, Amazon and Google have already deployed their own custom-built AI chips, including Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), across their cloud platforms.

Samsung has already established itself as a key player in the AI semiconductor industry. The company is a major supplier of components used in NVIDIA's AI hardware and is jointly developing an AI chip manufacturing facility in South Korea.

Samsung is also reportedly in discussions regarding the production of Google's future chips. As one of the few companies with expertise in both memory and logic chip manufacturing, as well as operating its own semiconductor foundries, Samsung is widely viewed by industry experts as a logical and reliable partner for Anthropic's custom chip ambitions.
