Backlash on Social Media: BMP Rectifies Picture and Information
SI Show-Cased for Using AI to Dress Yaba Dealer in Brazil Jersey
Sub-Inspector (SI) Tanzil Ahmed of the Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) media cell has been served a show-cause notice for using AI to digitally alter a detained drug dealer's Argentina jersey into a Brazil jersey before sending it to the media. Following intense criticism on social media, higher authorities corrected the photo and information across official channels.
A Sub-Inspector (SI) of police, Tanzil Ahmed, has been served a show-cause notice for using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to digitally change a detained drug dealer's Argentina jersey into a Brazil jersey before circulating the photo to the media. The incident triggered widespread criticism on social media after the manipulation came to light.
Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) Commissioner Mo. Ashik Sayeed confirmed the show-cause notice, stating that SI Tanzil, who is in charge of the BMP media cell, has been directed to reply within three days. Further administrative action will be taken based on his response.
According to Kaunia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rofiqul Islam, a drug dealer named Rasel Hawlader (35) was arrested last Monday around 4:45 PM with 800 pieces of Yaba from Mohammadpur Colony under Ward No. 5 of Barishal city. Being an Argentina fan, Rasel was wearing an Argentina jersey during his arrest. The station staff made him wear the jersey inside out, took a photograph, and sent it to the BMP media cell. However, SI Tanzil used AI technology to replace the Argentina jersey with a Brazil jersey and distributed it to media houses via email and WhatsApp groups.
Following intense backlash and controversy over the altered photo, higher officials intervened. Under their directive, the authentic photograph alongside the correct information was re-posted on the media cell's WhatsApp group, emails, and the official Facebook page of the Barishal Metropolitan Police.
The Police Commissioner told reporters that SI Tanzil admitted to the act, explaining that since Brazil had a World Cup match last Monday, he did it simply to create a buzz. Addressing the issue, SI Tanzil Ahmed stated that he did it out of mischief and expressed his deep regret over the incident.
