Thousands of former Grameenphone officials gather at GP HQ demanding 16 years of arrears and 5% delay penalty
Pay Dues or We Claim Ownership: Ex-GP Employees to Stage Mass Protest on June 30!
Former employees of Grameenphone (GP) are launching a major protest on Tuesday (June 30), at 10:00 AM in front of the GP Headquarters in Bashundhara, Dhaka. Under the banner of the "Grameenphone 5% Delayed Arrears Realization Unity Council," they are demanding long-overdue arrears and a 5% delay penalty. Protesters warned that if the management fails to clear the dues, they will declare themselves the rightful owners of the company.
Former officials and employees of Grameenphone (GP), the country’s leading telecom operator, are taking to the streets once again to demand the payment of their outstanding arrears and other legal dues. The protesters have warned that if the authorities fail to meet their demands, they may go as far as declaring ownership of the telecom giant.
A mass sit-in and protest program has been called today at 10:00 AM in front of the GP headquarters in Bashundhara, Dhaka, under the banner of the "Grameenphone 5% Delayed Arrears Realization Unity Council." Council leaders stated that thousands of former employees and their families from across the country will participate, advocating for a peaceful, dialogue-based resolution while demanding the immediate clearance of their long-standing dues and the 5% delay penalty.
Speaking to Dhaka Mail, Abu Sadat Md. Shoaib, the Convener of the Unity Council, said, "Preparations have been finalized for a massive program today. Despite 16 years of outstanding dues and an ongoing 18-month movement, Grameenphone has taken no effective steps toward a solution. Therefore, if the authority fails to pay, the employees will claim themselves as the actual owners of Grameenphone."
He added that the demonstration will also highlight how worker-friendly policies, mutual trust, good governance, and constructional industrial relations contribute to long-term corporate success and the socio-economic growth of Bangladesh. Furthermore, former employees will present proposals aimed at developing skilled human resources, creating new employment opportunities, and fostering a better workplace culture.
Historically, former GP employees have staged multiple protests. Notably, on February 25, 2025, during a demonstration under the banner of the "Terminated and Deprived Grameenphone Workers' Unity Council," police used water cannons and baton charges to disperse the crowd, detaining several protesters, including women.
