Teen Tragedy: Boy Dies by Suicide For Keeping Mobile Phone Hidden

In a heartbreaking incident in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area, a 14-year-old boy named Abdullah allegedly took his own life after his mobile phone was hidden as a form of punishment. The incident occurred on Sunday, April 20, at a residence in the Matuyail Uttarpara neighborhood.

According to Md. Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, “The body is currently at the morgue of the emergency department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The matter has been reported to the concerned police station.”

Abdullah’s mother, Azeda, recounted the events leading up to the tragedy. “I had enrolled my son in a madrasa to study, but he would avoid studying and constantly stay glued to his mobile phone. I scolded him and hid the phone before leaving for work at the garment factory. His father also left for work, so Abdullah was home alone. When I returned, I found him hanging from the ceiling fan with a scarf wrapped around his neck,” she said.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an unconscious state, where doctors declared him dead around 3:00 p.m.

The incident has cast a somber shadow over the neighborhood and raised renewed concerns about adolescent mental health, parental communication, and digital device dependency.
