A video clip featuring remarks supportive of Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina, delivered at an election rally by a Jatiya Party leader, has gone viral on social media.

At a campaign rally for the Rangpur-2 constituency, Mokammel Haque Chowdhury, a member of the Jatiya Party central committee, said: “We will bring Sheikh Hasina back to the country with due respect. Our leader G M Quader is speaking boldly in favor of the Awami League. He is speaking for Sheikh Hasina, for our party leader Sheikh Hasina. The people of the country have delivered their verdict in favor of the Awami League. If our beloved party comes to power, we will withdraw all the false cases against the Awami League.”

The statement was made during a public election meeting of Anisul Islam Mondal, the Jatiya Party candidate for Rangpur-2 and a former Member of Parliament. The speech was delivered on the night of Thursday, February 5, and a 31-second reel from the event spread on Facebook on Friday, February 6, going viral shortly after midnight. Verification confirms that the video clip is authentic.

Mokammel Haque Chowdhury hails from Krishnapur Union of Badarganj Upazila and is a practicing lawyer at the Rangpur court. His family has notable political ties: his cousin is Duke Chowdhury, a former Awami League Member of Parliament, while his uncle is Anisul Haque Chowdhury, a former State Minister for Communications.

Responding to the controversy, Md. Mostakur Rahman, Joint Convener of the Jatiya Party’s Badarganj Upazila committee, said in a press statement that Mokammel Haque Chowdhury’s remarks regarding Sheikh Hasina were made inadvertently and reflect his personal opinion, not the party’s official position.

Attempts to contact Mokammel Haque Chowdhury directly for comment were unsuccessful.
