The Association of Engineers, Bangladesh (AEB) has expressed deep sorrow and condolences over the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, former three-time Prime Minister of Bangladesh and widely revered as Deshnetri.

In a condolence message, AEB stated that Begum Khaleda Zia—an uncompromising leader in safeguarding Bangladesh’s sovereignty and democracy—passed away at around 6:00 am on Tuesday (December 30) while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital.

The message noted that Begum Khaleda Zia led the people’s struggle against fascism and hegemony throughout her life and stood as a symbol of sovereignty, democracy, and the protection of citizens’ rights. Despite enduring prolonged persecution and personal hardship, she never considered leaving the country. Her deep love for the soil and people of Bangladesh, selfless sacrifices, and courageous leadership have placed her at a unique height in the nation’s history.

AEB further said that her long political struggle and contributions will remain eternally remembered in the annals of national history.

Meanwhile, AEB has announced a mourning programme to mark the demise of the national leader. As part of the programme, a Quran Khatam and doa mahfil will be held at the AEB office after Zuhr prayers on Tuesday. In addition, a Quran Khatam and special prayers will be organised after Zuhr at the Jame Mosque adjacent to the High Court, arranged by AEB.

During these programmes, prayers will be offered seeking forgiveness for the departed soul and peace, prosperity, and wellbeing for the country and the nation, alongside condolences for her bereaved family. AEB has called upon all its respected engineer members to attend and participate in the programmes in a timely manner.

In the condolence message, AEB Convener Engineer Shahrin Islam Tuhin prayed for the forgiveness of Begum Khaleda Zia’s soul and expressed heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
