Foreign-Purchased Mobile Phones Must Be Registered Within 30 Days

Bangladesh is set to introduce the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) from 16 December. After the launch, any handset legally purchased or received as a gift from abroad will remain active on local networks for only about 30 days. Within this period, the buyer or user must complete the registration process—something that can be done easily from home.

To complete the registration, users must first create a personal account on the website neir.btrc.gov.bd. After logging in, they need to enter the IMEI number of the handset under the ‘Special Registration’ section. Generally, users will receive an SMS within 30 days, after which they must follow the steps below:

Registration Process:

Step 1: Create a Personal Account
Visit neir.btrc.gov.bd and register for a new user account.

Step 2: Enter the IMEI Number
After logging into your account, go to the ‘Special Registration’ section.
Enter the 15-digit IMEI number of your handset in the designated field.
(You can find the IMEI by dialing *#06# on the phone or checking the sticker on the phone box.)

Step 3: Upload Required Documents
For handsets received via air mail, the recipient’s National ID must be uploaded along with the sender’s passport or National ID (if applicable).
If more than one handset has been brought, the duty payment receipt must also be included.
Upload the necessary scanned documents such as National ID (NID), passport, or other relevant papers.

Step 4: Submit the Application
After filling in all necessary information correctly, submit the application.
Once verified, the handset will be registered officially.

According to the current baggage rules, an individual can bring in a maximum of two duty-free mobile phones from abroad and an additional six handsets upon payment of customs duty.
The payable duty depends on the price of the mobile phone. If a handset brought from abroad is not registered in NEIR, it may be blocked from accessing mobile networks inside the country.
