A leader of the Faridpur District Chhatra Dal has lost his position after sharing an 11-second viral video on Facebook allegedly showing BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir threatening an individual. The Chhatra Dal central committee confirmed the expulsion in a press release sent to the media on 16 November, Sunday.

The dismissed leader, Khairul Islam alias Roman (32), served as the joint general secretary of the Faridpur District Chhatra Dal. In 2018, he ran as the Chhatra Dal-nominated candidate for the vice-president position of the Rajendra College Student Council but was defeated. Khairul hails from Bhanga Upazila in Faridpur.

According to the press release, “Based on a clear allegation of violating organizational discipline, the central council of Chhatra Dal has removed Khairul Islam Roman from his organizational post. The decision has been approved today by Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam (Rakib) and General Secretary Nasir Uddin (Nasir). All leaders and members at every level have been instructed to maintain no organizational relationship with Khairul.”

Speaking on the matter, Khairul Islam Roman stated, “I had made a post on Facebook regarding BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. However, realizing my mistake, I deleted the post and asked for forgiveness. Yet, I have been expelled. I do not wish to comment further on this matter.”

He further emphasized, “In politics, there is no alternative to tolerance and utmost patience. That person (who was threatened) will vote for us and help us win. Threatening them damages our party’s image. We should always remain tolerant towards them.”

Arefin Kayesh Mahmud, Vice President of Faridpur District Chhatra Dal, confirmed, “I understand that the district’s joint general secretary Khairul Islam Roman has been removed from his organizational post.”

AKM Kibria Swapon, member secretary of the Faridpur District BNP, added, “We have heard about the matter. Chhatra Dal is managed through the central committee. This action has been taken in accordance with the central committee’s decision. We have no further comment.”
