To meet the rapidly growing technological demands of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector and ensure a reliable power supply for its data centres, leading AI research firm Anthropic has signed a massive energy deal.

According to a report published by international business newspaper the Financial Times, the company has completed a mega deal worth approximately $3.4 billion to secure natural gas-powered backup generators for its data centres.

The unprecedented move comes as the growing use of its flagship Claude AI model has created extraordinary demand for computing power and electricity worldwide, leaving Anthropic with little choice but to take this step.

Selection and Generator Supply Deal with Texas-Based OnePower

According to published documents, Anthropic purchased preliminary rights to secure the supply of heavy-duty power generators with a capacity of 1.7 gigawatts (1,700 megawatts) from OnePower Solutions, a heavy equipment supplier based in San Antonio, Texas, in late September.

Although the agreement does not involve the direct acquisition of the energy company, it includes the complex engineering and construction support required to install, operate and supervise the generators. International news agency Reuters attempted to independently verify the report, but neither Anthropic nor OnePower issued an immediate official response.

Infrastructure and Plans for Massive Future Investment

According to technology analysts, the benefits of investment in the AI sector are no longer limited to software development. Addressing the massive infrastructure requirements and energy shortages associated with operating AI systems has now become a major national and global challenge for technology companies.

An earlier separate report published in September revealed that Anthropic had drawn up an ambitious strategic plan to invest more than $500 billion in capital expenditure over the next decade to build the overall infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence.

Such innovative and costly initiatives by technology giants to ensure uninterrupted power supplies to AI data centres are expected to have a significant long-term impact on international energy markets and policies.
