Binance CFO Steps Down Amid $6.3 Billion Hacking Crisis
Kaiser Ng is stepping down as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange platform, following an unprecedented hacking incident in which cryptocurrency worth a record US$6.3 billion was stolen.
Binance Co-CEO Yi He confirmed the development in an official statement, saying that after successfully serving the company for more than five years, Kaiser Ng had decided to focus on a new business venture.
Departure After the Hack and Market Reaction
The announcement of the senior financial executive's departure came less than a week after a record $6.3 billion worth of cryptocurrency was stolen from Binance customers' wallets on October 29. Following the major cyberattack, all transactions and withdrawals on the platform were completely suspended for several days to strengthen internal security.
After the suspension was lifted and trading operations resumed, panicked customers withdrew approximately $3.6 billion worth of funds from the platform within the first few hours over security concerns.
New CFO Appointment and Transition Plan
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Binance's cybersecurity team jointly identified a North Korean state-backed hacking group called 'TraderTraitor' as being behind the unprecedented cyberattack.
In response to the severe financial crisis, Binance reiterated that all affected customers would receive full reimbursement of their funds and that no financial losses would be passed on to ordinary users.
The company claims that a structured transition or leadership succession plan had been underway within its board of directors for the past six months during this critical period.
Meanwhile, Justin Yek is taking over as Binance's new CFO, filling the vacancy left by Kaiser Ng.
Global market analysts believe that restoring investor confidence in the cryptocurrency market will be the primary challenge facing Binance's new financial leadership as it attempts to navigate the multiple crises triggered by the record-breaking theft, panic-driven withdrawals by ordinary customers and the departure of a senior executive.
