Dialogue Over Vice Chancellor Reinstatement
CUET Teachers Hold Talks With Government
- CUET delegations met high-level government officials
- Campus shutdown halts academic classes and labs
- Sit-in and complete strike continue Monday
Amid continuous academic disruption at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), the varsity's teachers' association has confirmed high-level governmental discussions aimed at resolving the crisis surrounding the reinstatement of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem. The update emerged on the thirteenth consecutive day of widespread joint demonstrations across the engineering campus.
According to university sources, the development was briefed to the press on Sunday, October 4, 2026, during a media conference organized in front of the Vice-Chancellor's residence. Assistant Professor of Water Resources Engineering and Joint Secretary of the CUET Teachers' Association, Md. Samiun Basir, delivered the written statement.
He stated that on Saturday, a combined delegation of CUET faculty members, administrative officers, and staff representatives engaged in a constructive, cordial dialogue with senior government authorities. The representatives formally submitted the charter demanding the swift reinstatement of Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem, grounding their position in contextual institutional realities, administrative stability, and student interests.
Md. Samiun Basir added that the authorities heard the arguments with patience and sincerity, acknowledging the complexity and gravity of the university's impasse. He noted that the academic community remains confident the government will take positive corrective steps after reviewing the facts, thereby restoring routine technical research, laboratory operations, and academic momentum.
Crucially, the university has been experiencing a complete academic shutdown since September 22, when students initiated an indefinite strike demanding the Vice-Chancellor's reappointment. The protracted deadlock has suspended all undergraduate and postgraduate lectures, semester examinations, and research lab duties. Over the past 13 days, student agitators organized mass rallies, human chains, signature campaigns, red-card demonstrations, torchlit marches, and political wall graffiti, drawing open solidarity from faculty and administrative staff.
Marking the continuation of the one-point demand, demonstrators announced further protest programs scheduled for Monday, October 5, 2026. A joint sit-in staged by students, faculty, and university personnel is scheduled for 10:00 AM outside the administrative VC Building. Additionally, commemorating World Teachers' Day on October 5, students plan to present floral tributes to teachers standing in solidarity with the campaign, while enforcing the full academic and administrative shutdown across the campus.
