Robi Axiata PLC has completed the final phase of its nationwide 4G network modernization programme, strengthening its telecommunications infrastructure for higher capacity, improved reliability and future 5G services. More than 3,500 sites across Chattogram, Cumilla and Noakhali were modernized within 180 days, marking the conclusion of the operator’s nationwide network transformation initiative.

The announcement was made on Sunday, October 4, at the “Celebration of Robi’s 4G Network Modernization in Chattogram” event at Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View.

According to Robi, the modernization programme in Chattogram, Cumilla and Noakhali was completed with virtually no disruption to customers. The upgrade has improved the average 4G customer experience by up to 20 percent across the three regions. Enhanced indoor 4G coverage has also been extended to an additional 10 percent of people.

The upgraded network uses advanced MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology to strengthen signal quality and coverage. The technology increases network capacity by using multiple antennas to transmit and receive signals simultaneously, supporting a more reliable connectivity experience.

The new infrastructure has also reduced energy consumption by up to 12 percent, according to Robi. The operator said the improvement will support efforts to reduce carbon emissions and advance its sustainability goals.

Digital infrastructure for Chattogram

Speaking at the event, Chattogram-9 Member of Parliament Mohammad Abu Sufian said Chattogram is the country’s commercial gateway. He said modern digital infrastructure in the region would play an important supporting role in trade, industrialisation and smart city management.

Major General (Retd.) Md. Emdad Ul Bari, Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), described the completion of the large-scale modernization programme within a short period as a significant engineering achievement.

He said Robi’s investment in improving connectivity would further strengthen Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector.

Engineer Belayet Hossain, Chairman of the Chattogram Development Authority, said modern and reliable telecommunications infrastructure is essential for the growth of the digital economy.

He said the network modernization initiative would not only improve service quality but also accelerate economic activity and digital transformation across the region.

Chattogram follows Greater Dhaka

Ziad Shatara, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Robi, said the completion of the Chattogram phase marked the successful conclusion of the company’s nationwide network transformation programme.

He described the achievement as more than a technological milestone, saying it was also an important step toward delivering a high-quality digital experience to customers across Bangladesh.

Shatara added that the modernization of Chattogram followed the recent upgrade of more than 4,800 sites across Greater Dhaka, taking Robi’s network transformation programme to another level.

Robi previously described the Greater Dhaka project as the largest and fastest network transformation initiative in its history. The company said the initiative improved customer experience by up to 125 percent across different clusters, reduced call drops by 20 percent and improved indoor network experience by up to three times for nearly half of its customers.

With the completion of the Chattogram phase, Robi says its nationwide modernization programme has further strengthened the foundation for Bangladesh’s expanding digital ecosystem and future-ready mobile connectivity.
