Amazon Unveils New Kindle Models With Major Design and Technology Upgrades
E-commerce giant Amazon has unveiled new versions of its popular Kindle series of e-book readers. Major technological, design and color changes have been introduced across its three core models—the entry-level Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft.
For the entry-level model, Amazon has removed the raised border around the display and adopted a completely flat, or “flush-front,” design.
The new 6-inch Kindle is just 6.8 millimeters thick and weighs 140 grams, making it the most pocket-friendly e-reader in Amazon’s history. It can open book pages 30 percent faster than the previous-generation model.
With 16GB of storage, the model can run for up to six weeks on a full charge. Its main attraction is the “Ube Purple” color, inspired by the Filipino purple yam, while an aluminum version is also available.
Paperwhite and Colorsoft Editions
Amazon’s best-selling Kindle Paperwhite has been made lighter and thinner than its predecessor and now offers up to 12 weeks of battery life. For comfortable reading in bright sunlight, it features a larger, high-contrast display along with adjustable warm-light functionality.
Meanwhile, the Kindle Colorsoft, which features a color display, has been redesigned with an edge-to-edge screen that delivers enhanced clarity and vivid colors in images. The premium “Signature Edition” versions of both the Paperwhite and Colorsoft feature a metal body, 32GB of storage, wireless dock charging and a modern double-tap feature for turning pages.
Pricing and Availability
Amazon has added attractive “Fig Red” and “Seaglass Green” color options to the newly designed e-readers. The entry-level Kindle starts at $150, while the Paperwhite and Colorsoft start at $200 and $290, respectively.
In addition, Amazon has introduced “Kids Edition” models that come with child-friendly cases and an Amazon Kids+ subscription, with prices starting at $180.
The two entry-level models are available for purchase starting today in major markets, including North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. The company has also started accepting pre-orders for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft.
