Responding to localized crime sprees involving robberies, teen gang disturbances, online gambling rackets, and neighborhood turf violence, Kishoreganj District Police have launched a tech-driven, citywide surveillance project. The strategic initiative entails installing 250 high-definition, night-vision CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) cameras across critical entrance avenues, primary traffic hubs, and vulnerable alleyways to preempt criminal activity and expedite suspect identification.
Budgeted at roughly BDT 2.5 million, the first phase of the deployment is currently operationalizing 50 units, prioritizing high-traffic junctions such as the Gaital bus terminal. To handle real-time feed analytics and long-term data preservation, a dedicated centralized server station and control room are under development at Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station.
The ramp-up follows targeted police actions over recent months. In September, the District Detective Branch (DB) detained 21 individuals engaged in illicit online gambling networks, preceded by the preventive detention of 25 youths linked to suspicious late-night street aggregations who were subsequently released into parental custody under bonds. Earlier violent clashes in Harua resulting in a fatality, public property destruction in Akhrabazar, and serial muggings along Narsunda lake walkways and Zilla Smaranie crossings had intensified public pressure for robust surveillance.
Local residents and merchant associations have welcomed the initiative while stressing the critical need for round-the-clock maintenance to prevent the cameras from falling into disrepair—a chronic issue with previous localized security setups.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station Mohammad Abul Kalam Bhuiyan affirmed that desk officers will actively monitor continuous video streams to relay tactical alerts to field patrol units upon detecting abnormal crowd formations or suspicious activity.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Mizanur Rahman stated, "Offenders routinely exploit darkness to evade detection. Consequently, these new systems feature advanced optical sensors engineered to capture vivid, full-color footage under low-ambient-light conditions. Sites were selected using empirical crime mapping to ensure deterrence as well as post-incident forensic precision."
