UGC Digital Library to Offer Over 30,000 E-Books and Scholarly Journals to 76 Universities
HEAT Project and BdREN Sign Deal to Expand E-Resource Access in Universities
- Agreement signed between the World Bank-backed HEAT project and BdREN to enhance digital research capacity across Bangladeshi universities.
In a major boost to academic research and higher education digitization, the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) Project signed a strategic agreement with the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) on Thursday (September 24). The signing ceremony for the initiative, titled "E-Books for UGC Digital Library," took place at the University Grants Commission (UGC) auditorium in Dhaka.
The MoU was formally executed by BdREN Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Tawrit and HEAT Project Director Professor Dr. Asaduzzaman in the presence of UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed. Key representatives from international development partners and education bodies attended the event, including World Bank Practice Manager Dr. Sherezad Joya, Senior Education Specialist and HEAT Task Team Leader T. M. Asaduzzaman, alongside senior officials from the Bangladesh Accreditation Council, UGC, and BdREN.
Under the agreement terms, faculty members, researchers, and students across 76 public and private universities will gain institutional access to over 30,000 international e-books, e-journals, and digital reference materials curated from seven premier global publishing networks. Emphasizing the move, UGC Chairman Prof. Dr. Mamun Ahmed noted that expanding high-speed Wi-Fi, broadband connectivity, and digital resource sharing forms part of UGC's broader roadmap toward realizing fully digitized university campuses nationwide.
Separately, during a mid-term review session for the HEAT project, UGC Chairman acknowledged that initial project implementation faced momentum delays due to post-pandemic challenges and transitional administrative phases. He noted that to achieve the initiative's primary objectives, a project extension may be considered if required.
