Online Scam Trap Around ‘The Odyssey’

Dhaka, August 10, 2026: Cybercriminals are exploiting public interest in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film The Odyssey to create online scam traps, Kaspersky has warned.

According to Kaspersky, scammers are creating fake websites that claim to offer free access to the film. Some of these websites promote dubbed versions in different languages to attract viewers. Fake reviews and ratings are also being used to make the sites appear legitimate.

When users attempt to watch the film, a fake video player instructs them to register to ‘continue watching for free’. The registration process asks for personal information such as names and email addresses.

In the next step, users may be asked to provide passwords and banking information under the pretext of activating a ‘free trial’. This creates risks of account compromise as well as financial losses.

Kaspersky has also warned users against reusing the same password across multiple online services. If one account is compromised, attackers may gain unauthorized access to other accounts using the same password.

Olga Altukhova, senior web content analyst at Kaspersky, said scammers often exploit public interest surrounding highly anticipated movie releases. She advised users to remain particularly cautious when a film still showing in cinemas suddenly becomes available for free on an unfamiliar website.

She recommended accessing content only through official services to protect personal information and finances.

Kaspersky advised users to verify website URLs and their authenticity before entering any information. It also recommended using only official streaming platforms and considering prepaid cards or designated payment services to protect payment information.

The company further advised users to use reliable security software with phishing protection, enable multi-factor authentication and regularly monitor online and financial accounts for suspicious activity.
