Reduce Carbon Emissions to Keep Earth Habitable: Information Minister

BARISHAL, August 9: Excess carbon emissions remain the primary driver of global climate change, triggering rising temperatures that threaten the Earth's natural sustainability, stated Information and Broadcasting Minister Jahir Uddin Swapon. He stressed that reducing global carbon footprints is essential to preserving the planet for future generations.

The Minister was speaking as the Chief Guest during the grand inauguration of the 'Divisional Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2026' held at Bels Park in Barishal today, Sunday (August 9) at 10:00 AM. The event was jointly organized by the Barishal District Administration and the Social Forest Department. 

Addressing the gathering, Minister Swapon stated, "Climate change is a global crisis that cannot be tackled by a single country alone. Heavy reliance on fossil fuels by developed nations continues to surge carbon emissions. To safeguard our planet, we must shift our focus toward renewable energy sources and scale up afforestation efforts nationwide." 

Highlighting the government's environmental roadmap, he revealed a national commitment to plant 250 million trees over five years—targeting 50 million trees annually. He remarked that tree plantation is not merely a patriotic duty, but a vital action directly linked to human survival and the planet's future. 

Chaired by Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed, the inauguration ceremony was attended by Police Commissioner Abu Raihan Muhammad Saleh, Additional Range DIG Dr. Md. Saifullah Bin Anwar, Conservator of Forests (Coastal Circle) Dr. Mollya Rezaউল Karim, Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Obaidullah, and Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Alaul Hasan, alongside freedom fighters, public officials, political leaders, journalists, and students.
