3 August, Monday: A two-day workshop titled “TikTok Masterclass on Journalism and Digital Storytelling” was held at North South University (NSU) to train students in digital journalism, responsible content creation, and modern storytelling techniques. Organized by TikTok in collaboration with NSU's Department of Media, Communication and Journalism, the event took place on July 27 and 28.
The workshop brought together students, faculty members, professional journalists, and digital content creators. Program highlights included analytical sessions on news reporting via short-form video platforms, combatting misinformation, audience engagement, digital safety, and an experiential TV newsroom study visit.
NSU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury stated, "We are pleased that TikTok partnered with our Media, Communication and Journalism department for this initiative. It opens new opportunities for our students and prepares them for future careers in journalism, media, and digital communications."
On the first day, School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam and Department Chair Dr. Md. Harisur Rahman delivered remarks alongside the Vice-Chancellor. A panel discussion featuring BBC Bangla Editor Mir Sabbir, TikTok Trust and Safety Lead Asma Anjum, and content creator Karan Parihar highlighted the impact of AI and reliable media practices. Dr. Md. Harisur Rahman noted, "Journalism education is no longer confined to traditional reporting. Our goal is to equip students for technical media and information-based content creation."
The second day focused on newsroom dynamics and content monetization, featuring insights from researcher Md. Zahid Hossain Khan, TikTok Trust & Safety Lead Emad Jafar, and creators Rashik Mohtasin (Magic Rajik) and Saba Chowdhury.
As part of the workshop, students participated in a digital storytelling competition producing short videos on campus-related social issues under designated hashtags. NSU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nasar U. Ahmed handed out certificates and prizes to the top three winners, who were subsequently given a guided tour of a national television newsroom.
