A student-led underwater robotics team from the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Dhaka, Bangladesh, has scripted a historic milestone for the country on the global engineering stage. 'MIST MAVIROV' won 1st place in the Pioneer Class at the prestigious MATE ROV Competition 2026 World Championship, held in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, from June 23 to 27.

MIST MAVIROV is a research-oriented team specializing in remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), bionics, and advanced marine engineering. Growing organically under faculty mentorship from early national-level projects, the 26-member organization spans four strategic divisions: Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and PR & Marketing. The team's path to the World Championship was paved by an iterative line of vehicle developments, including Leviathan 1.0, Leviathan 2.0, and Creeper 1.0, a drone boasting a 50 km operational range.

The Championship-Winning ROV: MAVIRIO The team's flagship vehicle, MAVIRIO, was custom-built for extreme deep-sea and under-ice environments. Its structure features a bio-inspired hydrodynamic profile modeled after sea turtles, ensuring a streamlined, low-drag body engineered to withstand harsh currents with a minimal acoustic footprint. The high-tech subsea drone boasts a 6-DOF propulsion system, a 2-DOF robotic arm with a multi-purpose gripper, a modular aluminum chassis, smart ice-avoidance arrays, precision cameras, and high-intensity lighting.

The 2026 championship tasks were themed around the UN Ocean Decade Challenges. MAVIRIO successfully aced intense mission stages spread across ice tanks, flume tanks simulating strong currents, and open saltwater environments. The team excelled in real-world scenarios, such as coral garden biological sampling, subsea observatory servicing, and offshore wind platform connector repairs. Teams were rigorously evaluated across three pillars: product demonstration, engineering and communication (technical reports, presentations, and posters), and safety, where Bangladesh's MIST secured the ultimate crown.

The grand finale results were announced on June 27. Competing against 86 of the world's leading engineering and technological universities representing 18 countries, the Bangladeshi team demonstrated unprecedented excellence in applied engineering, hardware innovation, and underwater drone development.
