As part of the government’s vision to build a modern, fast, and reliable Digital Bangladesh, free high-speed WiFi services have been launched at airports and other important public facilities across the country, said Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science & Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists during the inauguration of the free WiFi service at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The minister said the government has been implementing one initiative after another in line with the Prime Minister’s development plans and directives.

“You are already aware of the progress of various public welfare initiatives including the Family Card and Agriculture Card. Continuing that momentum, another important commitment has been fulfilled today, which will take the country’s digital advancement one step further,” he said.

He described the initiative not merely as a project, but as a reflection of the government’s commitment to public service.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam said enhanced internet services have been introduced at airports, railway stations, and other important facilities to ensure fast and reliable public services in line with the government’s manifesto.

“Our primary goal is to ensure convenience for expatriates and passengers,” she said, adding that development activities undertaken over the past two and a half months are being implemented gradually and that services will be expanded further in the future.

She also noted that the launch of the airport’s third terminal would open a new horizon for Bangladesh’s aviation sector.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Rehan Asif Asad said the service has been launched simultaneously at eight airports and six railway stations, including Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

He said nearly 250 access points have been installed from the airport parking area to the boarding bridges to ensure uninterrupted internet connectivity.

According to him, more than 20,000 passengers used the service at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport alone over the past few days, consuming around 2.3 terabytes of data. At present, nearly 1,800 users can remain connected simultaneously.

“Our goal is to ensure that ordinary passengers, especially people coming from remote rural areas, can access fast and free internet services easily,” he said.

He added that uninterrupted connectivity during check-in, immigration, and boarding remains a priority, and that the initiative will gradually be expanded to more airports and transportation hubs nationwide.

The minister and adviser later inspected the WiFi service facilities at the airport.

Among others present at the event were Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam, State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, the airport’s executive director, and senior officials of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) and Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

The government has already introduced free WiFi services at seven major airports and six railway stations across the country.

The airports include Shah Amanat International Airport, Cox's Bazar International Airport, Shah Makhdum Airport, Saidpur Airport, Osmani International Airport, Barishal Airport, and Jashore Airport.

Passengers can also access free internet services at Kamalapur Railway Station, Cox's Bazar Railway Station, Rajshahi Railway Station, Sylhet Railway Station, Chattogram Railway Station, and Dhaka Airport Railway Station.
