Smart Climate Studies Shine as Student Leader Secures 3.87 GPA
BM Alomgir Kabir, General Secretary of the university unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, has achieved notable success in the PhD first semester results of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Information System at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. According to the published results, he secured a GPA of 3.87 out of 4.
This achievement comes at a time when student politics in the country is often viewed negatively. Challenging the common perception that “engaging in politics hampers academic performance,” Alomgir Kabir has set a different example.
A resident of Monirampur upazila in Jashore, Alomgir Kabir grew up amid limited opportunities and various challenges typical of a mofossol setting. The struggles of farmers, the impacts of climate change, and concerns over food security inspired him to pursue agricultural education and research.
Currently, he is conducting research on “Smart Climate Agricultural Technology” under the supervision of Professor Dr. Safiullah Majumdar Kiran. His research primarily aims to develop technology-driven sustainable agricultural systems to address challenges such as climate change impacts, salinity, and irregular rainfall in the southern regions of the country.
Alomgir Kabir believes that Bangladesh’s future challenges extend beyond increasing food production to ensuring a sustainable and climate-resilient food system. He is working toward developing technologies that can maintain agricultural productivity with less water and lower costs for farmers. His research also incorporates the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), information technology, and climate analysis.
Due to his involvement in student politics, he has faced criticism at different times. However, according to his peers, he has maintained consistent focus on his studies and research alongside his organizational responsibilities. While a significant portion of his day is spent on organizational work, he dedicates his nights to research, fieldwork, and studying international references.
According to Alomgir Kabir, student politics is not merely about power struggles; it is an important platform for developing leadership, responsibility, and social awareness. He also emphasized that without educated and research-oriented leadership, the country’s future development is not possible.
Experts note that for a climate-vulnerable country like Bangladesh, “Smart Climate Agriculture” is one of the most relevant research areas today. Such research could play a vital role in ensuring future food security and strengthening the agricultural economy.
According to his classmates and teachers, this achievement by BM Alomgir Kabir is not only a personal success but also a positive example of advancing both student politics and academic excellence simultaneously.
