Shut-Off on the Slopes: SUST Bans Public Access to Hillocks Amid Safety Concerns
To prevent untoward incidents, the authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have imposed a ban on public access to the hillocks located within the university campus.
The decision was announced in an official notice signed by the university’s Acting Registrar, Syed Selim Mohammad Abdul Kadir, on Monday (February 24).
The notice stated, “In light of multiple fire incidents, damage to vegetation, environmental degradation, and other unexpected occurrences on the hillocks within the SUST campus, public access to these areas has been completely restricted. This order has been issued with proper authorization.”
Commenting on the decision, SUST Proctor Professor Md. Mokhlesur Rahman said, “We have received complaints that fires have been intentionally set on the hillocks for personal interests. To curb unrestricted access by outsiders, we have decided to close unnecessary pocket gates. The areas where fires have occurred are not suitable for movement by either students or outsiders due to safety risks, which has led to the imposition of this restriction.”
He further added, “The primary goal of this decision is to preserve the environment of the campus hillocks. We are drafting a policy, and once approved, warning signs will be installed in the restricted areas. Additionally, we have procured ten fire extinguishers to equip our security personnel to handle any fire outbreaks effectively.”
