Apple May Merge iPhone Action and Camera Control Buttons in Future Models
Apple fans may soon see a significant change in the hardware design of the iPhone. Technology giant Apple is reportedly planning to reduce the number of physical buttons on its devices even further.
According to information recently shared by a tipster on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Apple may combine the widely used 'Action Button' and 'Camera Control' button into a single universal button in future iPhone models.
A New Approach to the Action and Camera Control Buttons
Introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro models, the Action Button was retained in subsequent lineups, starting with the iPhone 16 Pro series. However, rumours suggest that Apple may gradually phase out the dedicated Action Button in new iPhone models expected to launch in the second half of 2027.
Instead, the functions of both features could be controlled through a single button. Under the proposed arrangement, a single press of the button would directly launch the Camera app, while a long press would activate all the shortcuts assigned to the Action Button.
This means the Camera Control button would not disappear entirely. Rather, the Action Button would be integrated with its functionality.
Design Refinement and Strategic Advantages
Reducing the number of physical buttons is expected to give the iPhone's body a more refined and minimalist appearance. However, no specific information has yet been confirmed about which models will be the first to introduce this transformation.
Earlier, there were also rumours of more significant hardware changes in the Pro models, including quad-curved displays. Technology analysts believe that Apple's effort to reduce physical buttons without removing familiar customisable features or shortcut functions could play an important role in shaping the future design language of the iPhone.
