SpaceX in Talks to Acquire Boost Mobile or Gain Access to Its Network
US aerospace technology company SpaceX is continuing intensive discussions to acquire wireless phone service provider Boost Mobile, owned by telecommunications company EchoStar, or to gain access to its existing network.
International news agency Reuters published the report, citing sources from influential US newspaper The Washington Post.
Long-Term Plan to Build a Hybrid Network
Elon Musk's company aims to build a powerful ‘hybrid satellite-terrestrial mobile network’ by combining Starlink satellites orbiting in space with terrestrial cellular tower networks.
If this plan is implemented, established US telecommunications giants such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile could face direct and significant competition.
Boost Mobile and Gen Mobile, both under EchoStar, currently have approximately 7.38 million active subscribers. Acquiring Boost Mobile would immediately provide SpaceX with an established customer base and a strong distribution network.
Business Discussions and Potential Obstacles
According to the report, Elon Musk personally met with EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen last month to accelerate the deal-making process. Following the news, shares of traditional telecommunications companies temporarily declined in the stock market.
However, completing this mega-deal may not be straightforward. Boost Mobile relies on network connectivity and tower leases from AT&T and T-Mobile to operate its core network. As a result, transferring ownership may require prior approval from both major operators.
Furthermore, providing uninterrupted services to ordinary customers across every part of the country solely through space-based technology would be highly challenging. SpaceX would therefore need to invest substantial additional funds in ground infrastructure and customer care services.
