ChatGPT to Expand Visual Advertising Tests

OpenAI, the developer of the popular artificial intelligence (AI)-powered messaging service ChatGPT, has decided to further expand advertising on the platform.

The company has announced that it will begin testing a new visual advertising system on ChatGPT toward the end of this month. Under the new system, users will see the advertisements while generating or creating images through ChatGPT.

Initially, only selected users in the United States will be exposed to the new advertisements. However, OpenAI has made it clear that the original image generated by the user and the advertising component will remain completely separate, with the advertisement clearly identified as such.

The company also said that the advertisements will have no influence on the responses generated by ChatGPT.

Modernising the Advertising System and User Access

Earlier this year, OpenAI began displaying its first text-based sponsored advertisements on ChatGPT. Previously, a small sponsored brand name and link would appear below the chatbot’s response. With the introduction of visual advertisements, the company believes it will be able to demonstrate more effectively how different products and services can fit into users’ everyday lives.

Not all users will see these advertisements. Customers who pay for ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Enterprise plans will continue to use an ad-free version of the chatbot. The new experience will initially be introduced primarily for users of the free version of ChatGPT.

Commitment to Safety and Sensitive Topics

Alongside the commercial expansion of its platform, OpenAI has stressed the importance of maintaining safety and protecting user privacy. Under the company’s policy, advertisements will not be displayed when users are discussing sensitive subjects with the chatbot.

For example, when users seek advice from the AI about physical illness, mental health or other personally sensitive matters, the visual advertising system will automatically remain disabled.

For now, the new system is being tested with a select group of commercial partners, while the company plans to expand the range of advertising formats in the future.
