Technology to Drive Smart Chattogram

Technology and research are being prioritised for transforming Chattogram into a modern, safe, environmentally friendly and smart city, said Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain. He stressed the need to use technological advances to improve traffic management, drainage and waterlogging control, waste management, public safety, citizen services and environmental management.

The mayor made the remarks as the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the two-day international technology conference ‘iConnect 2026’ at Premier University on Friday, 25 September 2026.

Dr. Shahadat Hossain said innovations developed by universities, researchers and technology professionals should be applied to solving real-life urban problems rather than remaining confined to research environments. He emphasised the practical use of technological advancements to bring effective improvements to civic services and urban management.

Shahadat Hossain, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Premier University, said an artificial intelligence-based smart traffic management initiative has been undertaken to address Chattogram’s longstanding traffic congestion.

He said traffic signal management at key intersections would be made more effective by analysing vehicle pressure and traffic flow. A monitoring system would also be developed to detect traffic law violations and illegal parking.

The mayor’s remarks highlighted the importance of integrating information technology, artificial intelligence and research into urban management. Technology-driven solutions for traffic congestion, waterlogging, waste management, public safety and environmental management could create new opportunities to improve civic services across Chattogram.

The two-day ‘iConnect 2026’ conference is providing a platform for discussions and knowledge exchange on various areas of technology and research.
