Amid an ongoing complete shutdown at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) demanding the reinstatement of former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem, the newly appointed VC Prof. Dr. Sheikh Shariful Alam has completed his official joining online.
Prof. Dr. Sheikh Shariful Alam confirmed the matter on Thursday (September 24) evening, stating that his joining was formally accepted by the Education Secretary. Copies of the joining documents have been submitted to the university administration, local district administration, and relevant government authorities. Regarding physically joining the campus, he noted that he intends to visit CUET soon after conducting preliminary discussions with key stakeholders.
The administrative standoff began after the Ministry of Education issued a notification on September 21 removing Prof. Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem after just 56 days in office and appointing Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) Professor Dr. Sheikh Shariful Alam as the new VC. Protesting the sudden decision, students launched late-night demonstrations that escalated into a full academic and administrative shutdown from the following day. The movement gained significant momentum after the CUET Teachers' Association extended its support, alongside students addressing an open letter to the Prime Minister.
